Surgical Technologist

Position is responsible for handling instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure, as well as maintaining a constant vigil of the sterile field.  Serves as a resource for others and participates in the preceptorship of students as well as staff on orientation.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Provides a safe, efficient and supportive environment for the surgical patient.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
  • Sets up sterile table correctly with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures.
  • Performs counts with circulator as indicated.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
  • Assists in draping sterile field.
  • Passes instruments, etc. to surgeon during procedure.
  • Prepares sterile dressings.
  • Identifies and communicates staff, physician and patient needs.
  • Prepares and correctly labels prescribed medications and solutions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. May administer surgical flush or irrigation under direct physician supervision.
  • Follows departmental and OSHA standards, policies, procedures, and precautions in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program or successfully completed an accredited nursing program.
  • Current Operating Room experience as a Scrub Tech preferred.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) is required upon completion of orientation, not to exceed 30 days from date of hire.
  • Certification as Scrub Technician/Surgical Technician preferred.

Position Scope/Patient Population:

This position has direct patient contact that provides care to newborn, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.

Registered Nurse Operating Room

Promotes, monitors and maintains safe, effective, and efficient nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care that are conducive to the health and safety of every patient.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Assumes individual responsibility and accountability for patient care delivered personally and care delegated to non-professional staff.
  • Serves as a resource for others and participates in the preceptorship of students as well as staff on orientation.
  • Provides intra-operative care to the patient undergoing invasive procedures, incorporating behavioral and technical components of professional nursing during the intra-operative phase. The scope of practice for the intra-operative nurse may include various roles such as circulating responsibilities, scrub responsibilities and education.
  • Provides a safe, efficient, and supportive environment for the surgical patient.
  • Reviews preference sheet for assigned cases and prepares room for the scheduled procedure.
  • Supervises all counts and assures compliance with the count policy.
  • Demonstrates proper handling of specimen to include accurate labeling.
  • Follows departmental and OSHA standards, policies, procedures, and precautions in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience

  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN), or 3 year diploma in nursing, from an approved college or university required
  • BSN from an approved college or university preferred.
  • Previous OR nurse experience, experience as an OR scrub tech, or OR nurse tech preferred.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with a current RN license is required.
  • Must have Kansas RN license by date of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers offered by the American Heart Association or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer offered by the Red Cross within 30 days post date of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 180 days of hire.

Registered Nurse

Provides professional nursing care to patients including a comprehensive assessment of patient and family needs, planning, coordination, teaching, documenting, counseling, and providing direct physical care.  Evaluates patient response to care and progress towards outcomes. Assists other personnel providing delegated aspects of care. Demonstrates knowledge of and delivers care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess and evaluate age appropriate data.
  • Implements interventions based upon the physician's medical plan and standards of care including medication and treatments with knowledge of therapeutic intent.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to appropriately delegate tasks and evaluate the effectiveness of care.
  • Provides professional nursing care based upon identified nursing problems.
  • Promotes team work through collaboration, positive communication and role modeling, respecting the individuality of each patient, family members, and fellow staff.
  • Supports the management team in establishing and implementing goals of the unit, including quality improvement activities, staff meetings, performing tasks as requested, and by increased awareness of own responsibility to help contain costs.
  • Contributes to continuity of care and effective communication by documenting and reporting care provided. Reports changes in the patient’s condition to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for patient and family safety, identifying safety hazards and emergency situations and initiates corrective action as appropriate.
  • Assumes responsibility for compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Supports a work environment that is highly supportive of a professional practice role, including accepting preceptor responsibilities for new staff members and affiliating students.
  • Follows departmental and OSHA standards, policies, procedures, and precautions in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience

  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN), or 3 year diploma in nursing, from an approved (Accredited by NLN or CCNE) college or university required.
  • BSN from an approved (Accredited by NLN or CCNE) college or university preferred.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with a current RN license.
  • Must have Kansas RN license by date of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers offered by the American Heart Association or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer offered by the Red Cross within 30 days post date of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required upon completion of orientation, not to exceed 180 days. Optional for PRN staff.
