Art Director
Responsible for provision of high quality and diverse arts programs. Recruits and trains all instructors and volunteers for arts programs. Develops new arts programs. Ensures arts staff and volunteers have support and materials that are needed. Supports art events to ensure they are safe and well run. Should maintain certification in CPR/AED and First Aid.
This position will office at the newly renovated Hubbard Arts Center and will develop and promote a comprehensive art program. The Hubbard Arts Center is a $2,000,000+ project including 2D and 3D art studios, a dance studio, a kiln room, digital media studio, a commercial grade demonstration kitchen and several multi purpose rooms. The Center is scheduled for occupation in early 2020 and programming to begin in spring 2020. The Recreation Commission has made a significant commitment to the arts in Derby. This is a tremendous opportunity to participate in a significant expansion of the arts in our community.
Essential Job Functions (listing most important first):
- Supervision of all youth and adult art programs. This would include arts, dramatics, dance, and technology classes.
- Administer, develop, promote and supervise all art program offerings.
- Responsible for training and supervision of all art staff, volunteers and instructors.
- Work with Supervisors and Marketing Director in planning and implementing various marketing strategies. Produce accurate and timely material for the production of quarterly program guide.
- Keep adequate records pertaining to attendance, budget, registration fees, etc.
- Serves as the Derby Recreation Commission liaison to the Derby Arts Council.
- Coordinate all the art related fund-raising activities.
- Coordinate any special events relating to youth or adult art.
- Responsible for the management upkeep and proper storage of all art supplies and equipment.
- Prepare annual budget, capitol improvement and equipment needs for art programs and facilities.
Additional Functions:
- Seek federal and state grant opportunities.
- Promote youth and adult art programs to the community through oral presentations and written communication.
Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to implement, high quality arts programming. Strong planning and organizational skills. Experience with operating various art equipment such as kilns, pug mills etc. Energetic, creative individual with a strong interpersonal skills. Must be 18 and have a valid driver’s license. Should maintain a CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Special Requirements
- EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited college or university with a degree in Fine Arts or related field is preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years previous experience in management and/or instructing the arts.
- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Need to have the ability to see, hear and move about. Must posses an audible voice for communication and ability to lift light equipment.
