BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist the district’s internal auditor in performing routine audits and assigned administrative duties in examining and performing an independent evaluation of Des Moines Public Schools concerning the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls and the efficient use of resources. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the internal audit department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Administration of Internal Audit Function
- Assist the internal auditor in developing, maintaining, and monitoring the annual audit plan.
- Other administrative duties as assigned by the internal auditor.
B. Routine Audits
- Perform cash visits and exit audits under the direction of the internal auditor.
- Assist the internal auditor in performing audit procedures related to annual audits and special reviews.
- Perform audit tasks as assigned in satisfying objectives presented in the annual audit plan in accordance with the Code of Ethics and The Standards for the Professional Practices of Internal Auditing which are prescribed by the Institute of Internal Auditors.
- Prepare appropriate work papers to document procedures performed in support of the findings and recommendations contained in the executive summaries.
- Provides progress reports on assigned tasks and immediate notification of significant or unusual items to the internal auditor.
C. External Communications
- Assist state, federal, and other independent auditors as required.
- Assist the internal auditor in the investigation and research of concerns and questions raised by external parties related to the effectiveness and efficiencies within district operations, and to report those results to the internal auditor.
D. Professional Training and Development
- Develop and maintain necessary analytical, technical, process, and software skills.
- Pursue and maintain professional designations relevant to the position and attend formal training, conferences, and seminars as assigned by the internal auditor necessary to satisfy continuing professional education requirements.
E. General
- Daily travel within the district.

HIRING SPECIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or related field.
- Eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) exam.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Two years’ public accounting experience or comparable in public education.
- Two years’ experience in accounting and auditing procedures.
- High level of proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook and other computer software programs.
- Competency working in a culturally diverse environment or the willingness to acquire these skills.
