Digital Organizer Project Staff
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Digital Organizer will implement Education Minnesota’s worksite relational organizing program using social media platforms, relational organizing apps, and emerging digital tactics. Digital Organizers will be expected to build engaging content, develop relationships and connections online or on-app; and work with staff and members to support their use of digital organizing techniques. Initial supervision will be under the director of interim policy & public affairs, with day-to-day direction in program implementation from public affairs professional staff. Project staffers will primarily interface with Education Minnesota members, leaders, and staff, as well as the general public, parents, and community stakeholders online.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with Field Staff and local union leaders to use digital recruitment tactics for unity team leaders at each of the targeted worksites around the state and build local union, campus and worksite digital organizing capacity.
- Conduct digital relational organizing and training with Education Minnesota members.
- Train unity team leaders on digital organizing methods. These trainings will be both collective and individual, as needed.
- Recruit, build and support a network of online member organizers.
- Assist and train Education Minnesota professional staff who will provide ongoing support and accountability for unity team leaders at targeted worksites.
- Work directly with unity team leaders and other members, as needed, to teach, clarify and support digital organizing tactics.
- Recruit Education Minnesota members and staff to engage in digital grassroots campaign tactics with Education Minnesota members and general public voters.
- Create engaging, relevant, and accurate content and shareable materials for social media.
- Train and monitor member, staff and leaders use of Empower relational organizing software.
- Promote online activism and participation in events, actions and grassroots campaign tactics with Education Minnesota members and general public voters.
- Input data and implement data strategies of the campaign, as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and understanding of unions.
- Knowledge and understanding of the legislative and political process.
- Demonstrated ability to engage people online and/or social media activism.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully recruit, train and support digital grassroots activist volunteers.
- Demonstrated awareness of social, racial and economic justice concerns.
- Good public relations, communications, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong planning and organizational skills and ability to prioritize work assignments to achieve ambitious, measurable organizing goals on strict timelines.
- Understand and effectively carry out complex verbal and written directions.
- Problem solve and work independently, including the ability to work from home.
- Experience working with confidential and sensitive information and issues.
- Ability to work with technology, social media, design and data tracking systems.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver’s license
- One year of demonstrated digital or grassroots organizing leadership success on a union, political or advocacy campaign.
- One year of engagement in a professional setting related to public education, early education, higher education, teaching, education unionism or a related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, government relations or a related field.
- Three or more years of demonstrated grassroots organizing success on a union, political or advocacy campaign.
- Professional experience working as an educator or education support professional in a public school or college or experience working with digital marketing and engagement.
- Experience developing digital content or organizing plans and building grassroots organizing networks.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
- Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed. Travel required. Able to successfully pass a post offer pre-employment background check. This is a temporary position, not lasting beyond May 2021.
