Job Summary
The Lead Librarian for Business Services position provides professional information services, instruction, readers’ services, and programming services for library customers. This position serves as system-wide program developer in the area of Business.
The position may include morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours including Sundays. Successful candidate may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.
Essential Functions

- Provides professional research assistance to customers, either in-person, over the phone, or electronically.
- Assists with collection maintenance duties for materials and resources in various formats.
- Develops and presents various library programs (educational, early literacy, community interest, or civic engagement and individual customer research or instructional sessions).
- Creates and curates online content to meet community needs and interests.
- Assists in development and evaluation of library services in line with the strategic focus.
Business
- Leads the development of system-wide library services to the small business/entrepreneur community.
- Initiates and builds effective partnerships with associations and groups serving the small business/entrepreneur community.
- Identifies trends and developments of interest to the small business/entrepreneur community in order to build relevant library services. Maintaining this awareness may require attendance of specialized training and conferences.
- Responsible for ensuring a high quality of business services through staff training, resource development, and other activities.
Public Computing
- Leads the development of system-wide library services that provide public access to information and communications technologies and builds information literacy.
- Identifies evolving customer demand for information and communication technology and responds with services that will expand or enhance the customer computing experience in community libraries.
- Identifies trends in information and communications technologies and their impact on society, and applies that knowledge to the development of public computing services. Maintaining this awareness may require attendance of specialized training and conferences.
- Responsible for ensuring a high quality of public computing services through staff training, resource development, and other activities.
Readers' Services
- Leads the development of system-wide library services that promote reading and connect library customers with reading materials that meet their needs and expectations.
- Leads the development of content and function of the "Books" area of the website.
- Identifies trends in reading, writing, publishing, and literary genres, and applies that knowledge to the development of services to readers. Maintaining this awareness may require attendance of specialized training and conferences.
- Responsible for ensuring a high quality of readers' services through staff training, resource development, and other activities.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Duties are considered non-essential and include the following:
- In the absence of other supervisory staff, may serve as Building Head.
- Serves on various library committees as assigned.
- Coordinates library volunteers as needed.
- Prepares correspondences and reports.
- Trains new staff as needed.
- Participates in ongoing professional development.
- Assists with special projects as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision
The position typically reports to a community library manager, assistant manager, or the manager of a major functional area such as Information Services. Supervision of the work of others is not a normal part of the work of these positions, but incumbents may from time to time assist in the training of other staff in library-related work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The employee is expected to perform or possess the following:
- Knowledge of public library resources, programs, and services.
- Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom in public libraries.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Strong organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and to set priorities.
- Ability to work cooperatively and have favorable relations with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to handle and resolve disruptive behavior effectively.
- Ability to operate relevant computer systems including hardware and software, such as Microsoft Office, electronic databases and electronic content platforms, e-mail, chat, social media platforms, and internet navigation in addition to other office equipment and security systems.
Education and Experience
- Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university required.
- Two years of recent, related professional experience required.
- Ability to obtain a Washington State Librarian certificate.
