Institute Information Sciences
The Communications Specialist provides administrative and publicity support for the operational and research needs of the Institute for Information Sciences (I2S). I2S is a designated research center at the University of Kansas to support faculty and staff conducting research in a variety of areas. This position will work on-site but a flexible schedule may be considered if desired by the selected candidate. The preferred candidate will work closely with the Research Program Director to develop a unified communications program for all research centers housed under I2S.

40% - Publicity: Responsible for the promotion of I2S technologies and services and the communication of information about I2S research. Prepare quarterly and annual activity reports; prepare and maintain outreach materials including website, posters, brochures, and social media; prepare news releases for I2S. Research data, create ideas, write and edit copy, lay out artwork, contact media representatives, and represent I2S directly before the general public.
25% - Maintain publications on the I2S website. Collect theses, technical reports, conference proceedings, and other publications authored by I2S affiliated staff, faculty, or students and post bibliography information to the I2S website.
15% - Assist with coordinating and organizing meetings, workshops, conferences, symposia, and other presentations for I2S. Assist with hosting visitors to the research center.
10% - Purchasing: Manage office supply inventory, restocking supply room and ordering as necessary. Coordinate purchases and reimbursements for the I2S student organization and the KU Blockchain Institute (KUBI). Assist with facilitating purchase orders and payments, and travel arrangements and reimbursements for I2S faculty and staff.
5% - Serve as backup for I2S Office Manager and help back up Nichols Facility Manager, filling in as needed when students are unavailable.
5% - Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, marketing/public relations, or a related field
- Minimum 1 year related professional experience
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced by application materials
- Minimum 1 year experience with InDesign, PhotoShop, and other Adobe products, or similar services.
- Minimum 1 year experience with Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel, Access, and Word
- Minimum of 3 years of related professional experience.
- Familiarity with the Institute for Information Sciences.
- Familiarity with University of Kansas, KU Office of Research, and State of Kansas rules and regulations.
- Experience with technical writing.
