Position Overview
The College Outreach & Online Programs (CO-OP) office reports to the Dean’s office of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. CO-OP is responsible for recruitment and outreach to prospective undergraduate freshmen and transfer students to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of the Arts, as well as recruitment, on-boarding, and advising of students in the College Online undergraduate programs. The Pre-Health Outreach Coordinator reports to the Director of the CO-OP office, and serves on the outreach team responsible for recruitment of prospective students to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of the Arts.
The Pre-Health Outreach Coordinator works with prospective KU students, and their families, to guide them through the college choice process, with an emphasis on helping students interested in pre-medical or other pre-health pathways in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. This position leads the communications and outreach strategy to prospective pre-health students, builds connections with high school and community college counselors, and collaborates with campus partners related to the pre-health student experience at KU. They use data to track the effectiveness of their efforts and make necessary adjustments. Meeting with prospective students and their families, giving presentations on the pre-health experience at KU, and attending recruitment fairs is required, as is the ability to travel.
The outreach coordinator stays informed of changes and trends in pre-health curriculum, medical school admission standards, and opportunities available to pre-health students. They conduct their work from a social justice perspective to ensure equity in their outreach and to contribute to building a more diverse KU.
While this outreach coordinator position is primarily focused on pre-health, they also contribute to the outreach and recruitment of academic areas in the College.
Job Description
Student Engagement (40%)
- Guide prospective students and families through the admission process including information about the overall college choice process, the value of studying in the liberal arts and sciences, and what it takes to be a successful pre-health student and get accepted into graduate level education
- Coordinate and conduct one-on-one campus visits with prospective students and their families, primarily pre-health focused students but other areas in the College as well
- Deliver group presentations on the pre-health experience at KU, may also include presentations on specific academic areas in the College
- Attend local, regional, and national recruitment fairs as a representative of the College at KU
- Organize a group of current students that can serve as student ambassadors for the College, and discuss their pre-health experiences with prospective students
Development of outreach strategies (30%)
- Use prospective student data to inform outreach strategies to students, guardians, high school counselors, and community college representatives
- Work directly with the communications team of the College’s Dean’s office to craft email communications and print materials, as well as other marketing needs
- Develop and implement events for prospective pre-health students
- Work with campus partners, including but not limited to, the University Career Center, Undergraduate Studies, KU Edwards campus, and the KU Med Center, in order to build and improve the pre-health student experience at KU
- Network with high school counselors to ensure their students have what they need to be successful before they get to KU
- Connect with area community colleges, including but not limited to, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Metropolitan Community College, and Johnson County Community College to communicate transfer student pathways for pre-health at KU
- Participate in recruitment and outreach team meetings and offer feedback and support to team members
- Cross-train and fulfill back-up duties for the other outreach coordinators
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferably from KU.
- At least one year of work experience related to student engagement either in a university, high school, or community college setting, as demonstrated by application materials..
- Ability to work and make decisions independently while equally being able to work in teams and collaborate, as demonstrated by application materials.
- Experience in planning events as evidenced by work history and application materials.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills, as evidenced by letter of application and information from references.
- Demonstrated strong computer skills, preferably with experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe design, e-mail and internet for writing, research and correspondence.
- Valid driver's license by time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
- Ability to accept responsibility and demonstrate personal initiative measured by performance in a leadership role.
- Familiarity with CRM technology, and enrollment management practices pertaining to the recruitment student funnel.
- Involvement or interest healthcare or medical related fields.
- Experience at managing multiple detail-oriented projects or tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to establish excellent working relationships with a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated passion for education and ensuring equity and inclusion in education.
