Director, Small Business Development Center
Reporting to the State Director of the South Carolina Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Dean of the College of Business Administration, the SBDC Winthrop Region Director leads and/or coordinates all aspects of the South Carolina SBDC program in the 15-county Winthrop Region through representation of the program to businesses, governmental leaders, the general public and the University. Sets goals for the area centers and manages performance. Provides leadership, supervision and coaching to staff. Handles all administrative functions and ensures compliance with federal, state and University laws, regulations and policies. Provides accurate programmatic reports quarterly and annually to the State Director’s office regarding counseling, continuing education and other activities as required to demonstrate achievement of goals. Works with the State SBDC Director on organizational structure to optimize performance. Manages the region’s business consulting, continuing education coordination and public relations development. Maintains and effectively executes the budget as prescribed by federal and state requirements for both the regional and area centers. Personally provides quality consulting services to existing and prospective small business owners. Functions as part of the SC SBDC senior leadership team, working with the State Director on strategic planning and execution, as well as development of operational policies and procedures. Interfaces with the business community in the counties assigned to the region to stay abreast of small business needs and to inform the public of SBDC services.
Minimum Training & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in accounting, business administration or related field required. Master’s degree and four years of experience in accounting, business administration or related field preferred. Small business, economic development and consulting/sales experience preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software highly desired. Experience with QuickBooks helpful.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic principles and theories of small business development. Ability to plan, promote and conduct seminars and workshops; speak to business groups, community groups and government agencies; develop and implement programs to assist small businesses; attend economic development activities; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public. Skills in leading and supervising staff, including establishing, monitoring and coaching to performance expectations. High level of analytical skills and exceptional organizational, planning and interpersonal skills.
